Gear lockout adjustment (street version shifters)
Adjusting Side Bolts for Proper Shifter Travel and Reverse Lockout
The side bolts regulate the lateral movement of the shifter handle. This adjustment is crucial to prevent excessive travel, ensuring precise gear selection and optimal shifting experience.
To adjust the side bolts:
- Shift into 1st gear.
- Locate the grub screw on the right side of the shifter.
- Rotate the grub screw until it gently contacts the center lock pin.
- Back off the screw by one full turn to create a slight clearance.
- Secure the screw with a 1.5 mm hex wrench, using the small screw at the top.
- Repeat this process in 5th or 6th gear.
Once the side bolts are adjusted, the reverse lockout will be functional. To verify, simply lift the ring beneath the shift knob.
Note: For BMW gearboxes with reverse to the left of 1st gear, this adjustment will effectively lock out reverse. If you have a 5-speed gearbox where reverse is in the 6th gear position, you can choose to lock out both 5th and reverse simultaneously or neither.
